Bell Island, Newfoundland - In the late 1890's Bell Islands mining started what would be a 71 year run of mining iron ore from over six different mines. While in operation, the mines ran almost 7 miles underground but today with all mines closed, water run off from the ground above has limited that to under 2 miles.
