St. John's, NL (16/07/09) - Emily Mercer was a premature baby. Born weighing 2 pounds 8 ounces her mom knew her little girl was special, but she never knew just how special. Em is one of a reported 300 people worldwide who share a rare genetic syndrome. Discovered in Japan in the 1980's, Kabuki Mask Syndrome (KMS)or just Kabuki Syndrome as it is known, is named for the facial similarities to that of traditional Japanese theatre dancers. Seen here with her 'flicky', Emily is a happy healthy lovable 15 year old who adores food, sleep and her kindred spirit, Santa Claus.

Emily was with me the day her mom picked me up after another hectic night shift playing waitress/bartender at a busy pub in downtown St. John's. She waited so patiently while I took forever choosing my new camera. It was a big deal for me. It's the first time in my life I've owned a real camera, I don't even own a point and shoot. So, after working my behind off the last few months to buy what will hopefully find a comfortable existence in my every life, I took my time. Sonya, you're my mama bird for sure. So patient and always there for me. I really don't know how you continue to put up with me sometimes but I sure do love you for it!

With that being said, I made a decision and here are the very first frames my Nikon drank in. Having no idea how to use it at the time, I see now the exposure is bad and the balance is off, but I believe Ems smile deserves to be at the beginning of my journey as a photographer. New camera, sunny day on a trampoline with joyful company-- I say it was a damn good start.
